Garbage Disposal Repair for South Charlotte Homeowners

A disposal that hums but does not turn is jammed, not dead. One that does nothing at all has usually tripped its own reset. Both are five-minute fixes — but a unit leaking from the bottom housing is finished, and no amount of sealant will change that.

What usually goes wrong

Jams from bones, fruit pits and cutlery; a tripped internal breaker; a failed splash guard; a leaking sink flange; and worn bearings that make a unit sound like it is grinding gravel. We carry the common replacement units so a failed disposal rarely needs a second visit.

Choosing a replacement

Horsepower matters less than build quality and grind chamber size. A 3/4 HP unit with stainless components will outlast two cheap 1 HP units. If your kitchen sits above a finished basement, the quiet insulated models are worth the difference.

While we are under there we check the trap arm and dishwasher connection — a disposal that keeps blocking is very often a symptom of a badly pitched drain line, not the disposal itself.

What's included

  • Jam clearing and reset
  • Leaking flange and housing diagnosis
  • Same-visit replacement in most cases
  • Insulated quiet models for open-plan kitchens
  • Dishwasher connection checked and corrected
  • Old unit removed

Questions

Garbage Disposal Repair — questions we get asked

My disposal just hums. Can I fix it myself?

Often yes — cut the power at the breaker, use the hex wrench that came with the unit in the socket underneath to free the flywheel, then press the red reset button. If it hums again straight after, something is still lodged in the chamber and it is worth a call.

What should never go down a disposal?

Grease and oil above all — they cool and coat the drain line downstream. Also fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke, coffee grounds, pasta and rice, eggshells in quantity, and anything with a pit.

Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?

A jam or a reset is a repair. A leak from the bottom of the unit, or bearings that are audibly gone, means the housing has failed and it needs replacing — a repair on either will not hold.
